One of my favorite watch brands has always been the Elgin National Watch Company , a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago in Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago. Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor Waltham who, ironically, was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P. Currier of Waltham fame. This early example of an American Art Deco timepiece features a 17 jewel, manual wind mechanism that was the top-of-the-line when it was first introduced (7 jewels or 15 jewels was standard). Its case measures 32.7mm wire lug tip to wire lug tip and 18.3mm in width (20.6mm with crown). In inches this is 1-1/4 long by 11/16 wide and it is fitted on a black grosgrain ribbon strap with original 14k Solid Gold filigree engraved clasp. Because the clasp slides along the ribbon strap it will fit ANY size wrist from small to large. It has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David and its original 17 jewel Elgin, USA manual winding mechanism (16/0 size, Grade 473) winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The ivory color, matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, the finely engraved silver Florentine border and inner dial are incredible. It features raised gold Arabic numbers, original blue steel Fuseaux-style hands and 60 minute inner track border. Signed ELGIN below the 12. The solid glass crystal is in perfect shape, removed in some photos to avoid glare. The 14 Karat Solid White Gold case is spotless, complete with black enameling on all sizes of the bezel and crisp engravings. The winding crown in pristine as well, winding and setting smoothly. Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent shape, complete with a finely engraved floral border. It is tastefully monogramed FHW as shown. Peeking inside I find its original Seventeen Jewel (Grade 473, 16/0 Size) movement, signed ELGIN USA – 17 JEWELS with serial number #27,502,062dating it to 1924, a very early example of a true Art Deco American watch. The inside of the case lid is stamped WADSORTH 14 KARAT SOLID GOLD with case number below. Fully serviced just last week, this beautiful timepiece winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Its wire lugs are fitted with a new old stock black grosgrain strap with original 14kt solid white gold two-piece clasp that is finely engraved. This band will fit any size wrist thanks to its sliding, fully adjustable clasp. A beautiful Roaring 20s timepiece that exemplifies what American Art Deco design was all about what a real beauty!
